Use Slack AI to Catch Up on Team Channels After Breaks

Tool:Slack
AI Feature:Channel Digest / AI Summaries
Time:10-15 minutes
Difficulty:Beginner

What This Does

Slack AI can summarize what happened in any channel while you were away — giving you a digest of key messages, decisions, and action items instead of making you scroll through every message from the last hour. For CSRs who need to know if any urgent escalations or policy changes came through during lunch or breaks, this is a 30-second catch-up.

Before You Start

  • Your company uses Slack (employer-provided)
  • Your Slack plan includes AI features (Slack Pro or higher with the AI add-on, or Business+ plan)
  • You're back at your desk and want to catch up on a channel

Steps

1. Open the channel you want to catch up on

Click on your team channel (e.g., #customer-service-team, #escalations, #ops-updates) in the left sidebar.

2. Look for the AI summary button

At the top of the channel, look for an AI sparkle icon (✦) or a "Catch up" button. In channels with unread messages, you may see a "Summarize" prompt appear automatically at the top of the unread section.

3. Click "Catch up" or the AI icon

Slack AI will generate a summary of the most recent activity in the channel. It typically covers: key topics discussed, any decisions made, and action items mentioned. The summary appears as a temporary card at the top of the channel.

4. Review the summary and dive into specifics if needed

The summary gives you the highlights. If something in the summary seems important, click the message link to jump to the full context. If nothing urgent is flagged, you can clear the summary and jump directly into your queue.

5. Use the DM summary for 1:1 threads

Slack AI works in direct messages too — open a DM thread with a colleague, click the AI icon, and get a summary of your conversation history. Useful before responding to a colleague after a long gap.

Real Example

Scenario: You return from a 45-minute lunch break. Your team Slack channel has 23 new messages.

You click "Catch up."

Slack AI summary: "3 main topics: (1) New return policy update effective today — manager posted updated policy doc. (2) Escalation protocol reminder for billing disputes over $200. (3) Team reminder about end-of-month CSAT reporting due Friday."

What you do: You read the policy doc link (important — affects cases you're handling today), note the CSAT deadline, and skip the rest of the thread since nothing is specifically addressed to you.

Time spent: 90 seconds instead of 8 minutes scrolling.

Tips

  • Channel summaries are available in channels you're a member of — not in channels you're not joined to
  • The AI summary isn't sent to anyone else — it's private to your session
  • If your plan doesn't include AI, you can manually use the search bar with "after:today" to filter to recent messages

Tool interfaces change — if the AI catch-up button has moved, look for a sparkle icon (✦) or "AI" label near the channel header.
